Chapter 21: The Meeting
They held the shareholders' meeting on the loading dock, where it had all begun.
The trucks had been pulled out and six hundred folding chairs set in rows on the concrete.
The same floodlights hung over our heads, and the same cold came up through my boots.
Eleven hundred small shareholders had been invited, and nearly all of them had come.
I knew most of them by the color of their jackets.
They sat at the front in a block, drivers, loaders, a woman from payroll, a man in a bad tie.
I had spent every night shift since the nineteenth in their break room, and I had told them the truth over bad coffee.
A few had cried.
Dieter sat at a table on the left side of the stage with his lawyer and two men in expensive coats from Chicago.
Matthias sat at the table on the right, with me beside him.
Oma sat in the middle on a wooden chair, with her cane between her knees and her pearl buttons done up to the neck.
Her proxy lay in front of her, unsigned.
The chairman called the meeting to order.
Dieter's lawyer stood up at once.
"Before any vote, a point of order," he said. "The proxy of Mrs. Liesl Reinhardt is conditioned on the chief executive being a married man with a child on the way."
