Chapter 24: The Lake House
Margot got to him first and put his arm over her shoulders.
Cornelius crossed the floor, three slow steps, and I saw what it cost him in his face.
He didn't sit.
He stood beside the bed with the oxygen hissing and looked down at the baby on my chest.
"Seven pounds," he said. "The same as the card said, the night you were born."
"She's got my chin," I said.
"God help her."
I laughed, and he reached out with a hand that shook, and the baby closed her whole fist around his finger.
He stood very still.
Then he sat on the edge of the bed, which nobody had said he could, and I put her in his arms.
"I looked for you for three years," he said to her, not to me.
"I'm told it was worth it."
"I'm told," Cornelius said, "that I'm owed a lemon tart."
Six weeks later, he ate it at the head of the table in the lake house dining room.
He had a rug over his knees and a spoon in his fist.
