Chapter 5: The Witch
The witch sat on a stool by the fire and took my left hand in both of hers.
Her fingers were dry and cold, and she turned my wrist toward the light without asking.
"There it is," she said. "Look at it, Alpha. For years it slept, and now it shines."
Mathias stood behind my chair with his arms folded.
He had not said a word since she came in.
"You're the one who did it," I said. "You swapped us."
"I did."
"You stood in my father's library and said it was a cure."
"It was a cure," she said. "For the girl. The cure was never the whole of it."
I tried to pull my hand back, and she held it.
"Don't be angry yet, child. You'll need that for later. Right now I've got three days to teach you, and you've got three days to learn."
"Three nights," Mathias said. "The full moon is Thursday."
"Thursday, at moonrise." The witch nodded. "By then the two souls will have grown into the wrong bodies and the roots will hold. A soul in the wrong body puts down roots there. For a week it lives off what it was. At moonrise it forgets what it was."
I looked at the fire for a while.
"So I can't swap back," I said.
"If your cousin stood beside you on the river stone at the turn of the tide and wanted it, you could. She won't."
"She doesn't know what's happening."
"She knows," the witch said, and her voice was gentle. "She asked me to make it permanent on the first night."
The words went through me with a small cold shock.
