Chapter 22: The Bridge Lifts
The bridge lifted at eleven on the second of May, and the whole waterfront came to watch it go up.
I had not asked for it.
I stood on the Canal Park pier in a black dress and my mother's gold cross, with my hair down my back.
I watched the span rise slowly on its cables with the sun on the steel.
It was a bright, hard, windy morning.
The lake was blue and flecked with white, and the first ore boat of the season waited beyond the piers with her engines idling.
Below the lifted span the shipping canal ran empty and green.
The funeral had been held at the Finnish church at ten.
The pastor had spoken for twenty minutes, in Finnish and English, about a deckhand who pulled three men out of the bay.
The tug crews had carried the casket.
I had not known so many people had known my father.
I had sat in the front pew with Stellan's coat across my knees.
When I turned at the end of the mass, the church was full to the doors, and the street outside was full, in work coats and black hats.
The old plow driver with the white mustache stood at the back with his cap in his fist.
