The investigator asked him to start at the beginning, and Tate found that he had one.
"I was eleven," he said. "It was the week my mother left."
The room in the state office was small and beige.
A box of tissues sat on the table, and he did not touch it.
The investigator was a woman in her fifties with grey hair cut short and a recorder between them.
She did not look at her watch.
She did not say sorry.
She wrote down every word and waited between them.
It took three hours.
He told her the kitchen and the nail by the back door.
He told her what his father said after, every time, while he put the coffee on.
He told her the lies he had made up for the nurse, and which of them had worked.
He heard his own voice go flat and steady, and he thought: I am saying it.
