Chapter 17: What Agnes Sold
"Four thousand dollars," I said.
My voice was perfectly flat.
"Is that what I cost, Gran? On top of the tithe?"
Agnes did not answer.
I walked out of the kitchen and up the narrow stairs to the warren hall, with the page in my fist.
I rang the old brass bell on the landing myself.
I rang it until the Hollow came.
They came in aprons and work coats, bakers and laundresses, the fish seller with his hands still smelling of the stall.
They filled the benches and the aisles and stood three deep against the walls.
Agnes came up last, one slow step at a time, and stood in the middle of the floor where I had stood a week ago.
"Say it," I said. "All of it. Not the part you told us before."
She looked at the faces.
I think she had been rehearsing this for six years, and now there was nothing left of the rehearsal.
"When Rue went up the hill," she said, "I thought it was a year."
Her voice was dry as paper.
