Chapter 12: On My Own Feet

I put on Quincy's shirt and opened the door myself.

Two officers stood in the hall, young and uncomfortable.

Behind them, the elevator was full of reporters.

"Mrs. Stockwell?" the older officer said. "We have a report that you were taken from a medical appointment against your will."

"By whom?"

"A Mr. Quincy Crane."

"I'm Suzette Reichart," I said. "I'm thirty years old and I'm standing in this hallway on my own two feet."

A flash went off.

I did not flinch.

"Nobody took me anywhere," I said. "I walked out of a clinic by myself, on purpose, and I got into a car I chose. My husband has kept me in a locked house for five days with a guard on the door. He took my phone."

The younger officer's pen stopped.

"Ma'am, is that true?"

"Ask him where my phone is."

Kenneth stepped out of the elevator in his overcoat, with a lawyer on each side and a cut across his cheek.

"Darling," he said, in a voice that carried to the cameras. "Thank God. We've been out of our minds."

"Don't touch me."

He stopped.

I watched it land, and watched the reporters watch it.

"Mrs. Stockwell is unwell," Kenneth told the officers. "She's been under severe strain since her abduction. She's pregnant. She isn't reliable."

There it was again.

The same word, in the same soft voice, from the same man.

Not reliable.

Damaged.

Used.

I stepped forward, and every camera lifted.

"My name is Suzette Reichart," I said. "Five years ago I was taken from my engagement party and raped for three days. I have been told, since then, by this man and by everyone in his circle, that something was wrong with me."
