Chapter 23: For the Boy
I did not decide in the hospital room.
I decided at four in the morning, with my daughter asleep in the crook of my arm and Quincy's silhouette against the window.
"Whatever you choose," he said, "I'm with you."
"I know."
"Kenneth's lawyers filed a petition at midnight. If you refuse, they'll say you killed the boy. A hundred newspapers will print it."
"I don't care what they print."
"I know you don't."
"I care that he's four."
I looked down at her.
She had her fist against her cheek, and the same little frown I had worn since childhood.
"She is not a medicine," I said. "I won't ever let anyone call her one."
"No."
"But the blood in her cord is hers. It's mine to decide. Not his, not a judge's, not a lawyer's."
"Yes."
"And I get to say who it's for."
Quincy did not answer.
He sat on the edge of the bed and waited.
"It's for the boy," I said. "It's not for Kenneth. It's for the little boy with the whale, who has never hurt anyone."
"Suzette."
"I want it in writing. His name is on nothing. He doesn't visit, he doesn't call, and he doesn't get credit in a single newspaper. I'll sign the order myself and I'll walk it into the room."
"Are you sure?"
"I have never been so sure of anything in my life."
"Say it to me again," Quincy said. "So I know it's yours."
"It's mine."
"It isn't a trade."
"It is the opposite of a trade."
"Then I'm with you," he said, and kissed my hair, and I felt it settle.
