Chapter 9: After Closing

He came to the cage at six minutes to close, and I knew him by his shoes.

I did not look up from the buyback slip I was writing.

The bookstore had emptied out.

The manager had gone to the back with the till.

The two girls at the register had finished their shift and left.

The front of the store was a long dim aisle of sweatshirts and textbooks under half the lights.

"Solheim," Aksel said.

"We're closing," I said.

"I know," he said.

He laid something on the counter, on the wood between my elbows.

It was a single typed page, folded once.

I did not unfold it.

I could see the corner of it, and in the corner, in the second line, was a word I had learned to recognize.

*Occured.*

"My aunt gave me that," he said.

"This morning."

"I don't want to read it," I said.

"I'm not asking you to," he said.

"Then why show me?" I said.

"Because I don't know what's true," he said.

"And you're the only person who does."

I put down my pen.

I looked at him.

He stood with both hands flat on the counter, a foot from mine, with the cuffs of his white shirt turned back.

He looked as though he had not slept.

He also looked as though he had decided something.

"What's on the page?" I said.
