Chapter 23: Her Father's

The crew filed out, and the boss took Bianca into the office behind the long room.

She asked for me.

I sat in the corner chair with Nico on his feet behind me, and my father's empty desk between us and the old man.

Bianca stood in front of the boss with her hands clasped.

She had worn the black dress from the Mass.

"Miss Corsi," the boss said. "Your father was a thief."

"Yes, sir."

"He was also my friend for twenty years, and I signed his death with a pen. I have thought about that every March."

She said nothing.

He took a flat envelope from his desk and slid it across.

"The deed to the building on the corner in Elizabeth," he said. "He bought it before he began skimming. It has been in a drawer in this club for nine years. The tenant pays rent into an account in your name. It's about two hundred thousand dollars."

"The gyro shop," Bianca said.

"The gyro shop, and the lot, and the old garage behind it. It is yours."

Her fingers closed on the envelope. She did not open it.

"And there is a second matter," the boss said. "The Family took your father. The Family owes a life. I am old, but I am not a fool. If you say a word, Carmine Marchetti will not see Sunday."
