Chapter 22: The Seal
On Thursday the long room at the club was so full that men stood along the walls.
Forty soldiers, twelve capos, and the boss in a chair at the head, with a brass brazier on the floor in front of him.
I stood near the back beside Nico, with the steel box in my arms.
Nobody had told me to come. Nobody had told me to stay away.
My father walked in last, in a dark suit, with his hands empty.
He didn't look at anyone.
He crossed the floor to the brazier and stopped.
"Carmine Marchetti," the boss said. "You have kept the seal of this house eleven years. Is it in your hand?"
"It is."
"Show it."
My father took the black seal out of his pocket and held it up.
It was a small brass stamp with an ebony handle. I had watched it come down on the bottom corner of five hundred and seventy-six slips.
"You stamped a daughter into a cage with this," the boss said. "You stamped a ward into a lie. You killed at my word and you let your house rot on it."
My father's jaw worked.
"I'll say the last part again for the room," the boss said. "At my word. I am not a man who pretends."
A murmur went along the walls.
I saw Nico's head turn.
I saw Bianca, at the side door, standing very straight with her hands clasped, hear the boss say it aloud for the first time in her life.
"Put it in the fire," the boss said.
My father walked forward.
He stood over the brazier a long moment with the stamp in his fist.
