Chapter 21: No Permission
Livia's POV
I caught up with them in the alley behind the bakery.
Franco's car was idling with the back door open, and Nico was standing beside it with his hand on the roof.
He saw me coming and didn't move.
"Tell me it was nothing," I said.
"It was something."
"Then tell me the something."
He told me the whole thing in a flat voice, standing in the cold, without once looking away.
Five years. Newark. The boss's driver, at the boss's table, whenever he called.
"You signed it," I said.
"This morning."
"Before you asked me."
"Yes."
"You decided what I could afford, and you decided what you'd pay, and you didn't ask."
"Livia, if I'd asked you'd have stayed here and fought it."
"Yes! Because it's mine to fight!"
Franco cleared his throat and slid down in the driver's seat.
"I'm going to go sit in the car," he said, which made no sense, because he was already in it.
I took a breath.
A woman with a bakery bag was staring at us from the end of the alley.
"Get in," I told Nico.
"Where?"
"Anywhere I can say what I'm going to say without an audience."
Franco drove us to a motel off Route 1 that rented rooms by the hour and by the night.
I paid for one with my own card.
I didn't speak in the elevator, or the corridor, or while I fought the key card in the lock.
The door shut behind us, and I turned around and put my back to it.
"You know what you did," I said.
"I know."
"You're exactly like him."
His face changed.
"Not like Carmine," I said. "Like all of them. You looked at what I wanted, and what I could bear, and you decided. You never even said the word permission and you still took mine."
