Chapter 20: Falcone's Debt

Nico's POV

I told Livia it was nothing and walked out of that church with my ribs on fire and my mouth full of the lie.

The man in the gray coat drove me to a bakery in Elizabeth.

It was closed. The chairs were up on the tables.

The boss sat at the back one, alone, with a plate of sfogliatelle and a small cup.

"Sit, Falcone," he said. "Eat something. You look like hell."

I sat. I didn't eat.

"The girl bought your life with a slip of paper," he said. "That's the Family's custom, and I honor it. No man in that room will touch you."

"Thank you, sir."

"Don't. It is not a gift. It's a receipt."

He broke a pastry in half and set the pieces on the plate.

"Nine years ago Bianca's father was skimming. The order was mine and the hands were Carmine's. You were in the car."

"I was eighteen."

"You were in the car," the boss said, without cruelty. "You heard one sound, and you drove home, and for nine years you worked for the man who did it. The Family does not forget a man in that car, whether he knew or not."

"What do I owe?"

"Carmine pays for the killing. You pay for the silence."

"I never told anyone."

"Until the girl read it out of a phone." He looked at me with his old, patient eyes. "Now the daughter knows. Soon a hundred people will know the shape of it. Someone has to stand where the Family can see him."
