Chapter 15: Rupert's Gallery
Crane Fine Art held a dinner for its best collectors on the Tuesday before the gala.
I walked in at nine, in a green dress, past a doorman who had been told to expect me.
Nobody had told him to stop me.
Rupert wanted me to come.
He had put my name on the list himself.
The note to the hostess read, in his smooth blue hand, Mrs. Harrington, front table.
He wanted thirty witnesses to watch the unhappy wife make a scene.
Thirty people in black sat at one long table under a ceiling of white lights.
Blair sat at the head of it.
Behind her on an easel stood a single huge canvas with a cloth over it.
Rupert rose with his glass.
"Siobhan. How good of you."
"You asked so nicely."
"Join us. We were about to toast the tenth Lantern."
"I'd rather join you for a different toast."
He smiled with his teeth.
