Chapter 22: Born at the Pass
Abel picked the chair up.
He set it straight beside the bed.
Then he walked to the door, opened it, and called down the stairs in a voice that went through the whole building.
"Doctor."
She was up in under a minute, in Hatty's bathrobe, with her bag.
She looked at the bed.
She looked at me.
"Well," she said. "Three and a half weeks early. Somebody's impatient."
"The road's closed," I said.
"I know the road's closed. I've delivered forty pups in cabins with no road at all."
She put her bag on the dresser and snapped it open.
"Abel. Towels. Every clean one in this building."
He didn't move.
He was standing at the foot of the bed with his hands open at his sides.
His face was gray.
I'd seen that face once before, in the reefer trailer, looking at beef on a hook so he wouldn't have to look at me.
"Abel," I said.
He looked at me.
"This isn't February."
His throat moved.
"There's a doctor in the room," I said. "There's a stove downstairs. There's forty people and a pie case. This isn't your truck at the gate."
