Chapter 10: Not Tonight, Sir

Gran had broken her wrist and bruised her hip, and she was cross about both.

The doctor kept her overnight for the pain and the pills, and by nine in the evening she was asleep with her mouth open.

I sat beside the bed until the nurse told me that visiting hours were over.

Kirk was in the corridor with two paper cups of coffee.

He held one out, and I looked at it for a long second.

"It's sealed," he said. "I watched the woman pour it and put the lid on."

I laughed, and then I put my hand over my mouth, and then I was crying.

He took the cups out of my hands and set them on the floor.

He put his arms around me, and I put my face into his chest.

He smelled like starch and rain.

"I'm sorry," I said into his shirt. "I'm so tired."

"I know."

"You can't hold me. It's your rule."

"The rule was that Ansel was under my command and you were a witness against him." His voice was low. "He's relieved of duty as of this morning. The IG took your statement herself."

"So he isn't."

"So he isn't under my command."

I lifted my head.

"Then I'm asking you something, sir."

"Ask."

"Take me home with you."

He did not answer for a moment.

His eyes went over my face and stopped at my mouth, and I watched him decide.

"I'm not doing this because you're grateful," I said. "And I'm not doing it to spite them."

"I know you aren't."

"I need you to know that I'm still angry about forty seconds."

"Good," he said. "Stay angry. Just do it in my house."

His quarters were a plain brick house at the end of a row of oaks.

He locked the door behind us, and I heard the bolt slide home.

He did not turn on a light.

I stood in the hall with my back against the wall and my heart going hard.

"I kissed you in a kitchen," I said. "You stopped it."
