Chapter 12: Why You Didn't Need It
They took Livia through the swinging doors on a gurney, and my mother ran after it until a nurse blocked her with one arm.
"Family waits here, ma'am."
"I'm her mother."
"Then you wait here, with the rest of the family."
She turned around, and every face in the corridor was looking at her.
Dad had sat down on a plastic chair with his head in his hands.
Gran watched from her doorway in a borrowed robe.
Kirk stood near me, close enough that his sleeve touched mine, and said nothing.
It took forty minutes for the doctor to come out.
She was a small woman in blue scrubs, with a paper mask pulled under her chin.
"The baby is alive, and the placenta has a small tear," she said. "We stopped the bleeding. She'll be on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy."
Mom made a sound and put her hand to her chest.
"Her heart," she said. "Doctor, her heart condition. Did the stress..."
"What heart condition?"
The corridor went quiet.
"The one she was diagnosed with as a child," Mom said carefully.
The doctor looked down at her tablet.
"Her chart shows a murmur found at age eight, and it was cleared by a cardiologist at twelve. Her heart is healthy. I listened to it myself."
I looked at my mother.
"Cleared," I said. "At twelve."
She did not answer.
"Mom," I said. "For twelve years you told the whole world she could die at any time."
"The doctors were uncertain."
"This one isn't."
"Ginny, you don't understand what a mother does," Mom said, and her voice began to climb. "A girl like Livia, an orphan, with nobody. She was frightened of everything. If she was fragile, she was safe. If she was fragile, nobody asked anything of her."
