Chapter 9: The Truth About Chapter Three
She told him in the dark, a little before dawn, with her back against his chest.
"I'm not Lan Zhiyao."
His arm was heavy across her waist.
It did not tighten and it did not leave.
"I know you're not," he said.
She turned her head.
"You know?"
"The real Lady Lan was a quiet girl who hadn't lifted her eyes in four months. She would never have bitten a guard."
His voice was low and level against her ear.
"I decided I would let you tell me when you wanted to."
"That's very patient of you."
"I'm three thousand years old, Zhiyao. It's all I've got."
She rolled over to face him.
He lay on his side in the faint grey light.
His beard rested against the pillow, and his dark eyes were open and waiting.
She took a breath.
"I'm twenty-seven. I'm from a place with no cultivation, no immortals, no sects."
She swallowed.
"We have buses and phones and a lot of paperwork."
She took a breath.
"One night I was riding home, reading a web novel on my phone. The novel was about you."
"About me."
"It's called The Heaven-Chosen Empress. You're the male lead. The Holy Maiden is the female lead, Bai Xueling. And Lan Zhiyao is the cannon fodder."
"The what?"
"The woman the author kills in chapter three to prove the villains are villains."
She made herself look at him.
"That's her whole part. She's a paragraph."
The room was very quiet.
"I didn't know what else to do," Zhiyao said. "So I pointed at a sleeve."
Wuyan stared at her.
His face did not change at all, and then a muscle moved beside his mouth.
"A paragraph," he said.
