Chapter 13: Tomorrow

The queen did not even look at him.

"Lord Chancellor, you may call the Council for tomorrow," she said. "It may not sit."

Gresham's smile slipped half an inch.

"Your Majesty?"

"The law of mourning, Hadrian. You wrote half of it yourself."

"No Sitting may open in the five days before the remembrance of a dead king."

"My husband's remembrance falls on the fifth day from now."

"The Council will sit on the morning after, or it will not sit at all."

Behind his spectacles, his eyes did a quick, ugly sum.

"The law is old," he said.

"So is the Accord. You are very fond of it."

He bowed, thin and stiff, and the guards followed him out.

The queen waited until the lantern light had gone down the passage.

Then she sat back down in her chair as if her legs had been cut.

"That buys us five days," she said. "Not one more."

Lucan didn't answer her.

He took my hand and walked out of the study without a word, and I went with him.

He didn't speak all the way up the stairs.

In his rooms he shut the door and stood with his back to me, both hands braced on the mantel.
