Chapter 21: The Showing Rehearsal

The council head was waiting in the stone lodge with a fire laid and a long sheet of yellow paper.

The great hall was empty.

Three hundred chairs stood in rows facing the hearth.

The black oak chair waited at the end of them.

Griffin walked in beside me with his hand at my back, and the man with the pale blue eyes looked at it and said nothing.

"Miss Dahlgren," he said.

"You are early."

"Your driver told me to be."

"I wished to speak to you alone."

"Whatever you say to me," I said, "he can hear.

"He's a wolf."

The old man's mouth thinned.

"Very well.

"At Midwinter, you will stand here."

He pointed to a flat gray hearthstone in front of the fire.

"The speakers will address the Showing in turn.

"My daughter has asked to speak first.

"When the last has spoken, the pack will be silent.

"You will have the length of nine heartbeats to answer."

"Nine," I said.

"If you say nothing in nine, the Right is ended.

"If you say that you do not keep him, it is ended.

"If you say that you keep him, you will be asked to say it again, and the Alpha will have the chance to speak."

"What does it cost me?"

"If you keep him?"

"Yes."

"Everything that comes with him," said the old man.

"Three hundred wolves who will watch you every day.
