Chapter 11: Cold Peak

The Cold Peak hut had one room, one stove, and a bed of furs piled so deep that Si-hyeon sank into them to the elbows.

It was the highest building in the Heavenly Demon's domain.

Gwi-han had carried Si-hyeon up the last hundred steps over his protests, because the snow was past Si-hyeon's knees and Gwi-han said it would be faster.

It was.

It was also embarrassing.

"I can walk," Si-hyeon had said into his collar.

"You'd freeze."

"I'm from a mountain."

"A warm one."

Now Gwi-han set him down on the furs and knelt to light the stove, and the shadows of the flames climbed his back.

Outside the single window, the world was blue snow and black rock under a clean white moon.

Gwi-han had said, "I always come here on this night," and nothing else, and Si-hyeon hadn't asked.

He watched Gwi-han's shoulders in the firelight.

"Why this night?"

Gwi-han took a long time to answer.

"Eight years ago tonight, I lost a fight."

Si-hyeon laughed.

Gwi-han didn't.

"You did not."

"It was the only one."

"You? The Heavenly Demon?"

"I wasn't yet. I was the cult's second-best sword, and a fool." He stirred the coals. "I had never lost. I'd been told I couldn't. I thought it was a law of nature, like winter."

"And?"

"And a man who didn't know who I was put me on my back in nine moves."
