Chapter 22: Kneel

Nine hundred swords came out at once.

The sound was like a sheet of ice breaking.

Elders were on their feet, shouting.

A fat man in the second row of the Mount Hwa benches howled that the Demon had walked into the Pavilion to murder them all.

Gwi-han walked up the center aisle.

He did not hurry.

He did not look at the swords.

Men flinched back from him on both sides, and blades dipped.

Si-hyeon stood in the middle of the floor with his iron sword in his hand.

If this went wrong, he would not reach Gwi-han in time.

He stepped in front of him.

He put his back to Gwi-han's chest and his sword toward the hall.

"Put them away," he said.

"Ryu!"

"He's unarmed. He walked in alone. Look at his hands."

They looked.

Gwi-han's hands hung at his sides, open, with the scar showing on the left palm.

"He's the Demon," screamed the fat man. "Kill him now!"

"He's a Demon who healed my junior for three nights," Si-hyeon said. "He nearly died doing it. Ask Tak Ha-neul."

"It's true," Ha-neul said from behind him, in a clear, ringing voice.

Si-hyeon hadn't known he could speak so loudly.

"He knelt in the keep's infirmary for three nights with his hands on my back. I felt it. I felt his life go into me. I'd be a corpse without him."

"A trick."
