Chapter 21: The Plum Pavilion

The Plum Pavilion was a white hall on a hill, with its doors thrown open to the blossoms.

Eight sects sat on eight rows of benches, and nine hundred people looked up when Si-hyeon walked in.

He wore his old Azure Cloud blue.

He had his iron sword on his back and a lacquered box under his arm, and he did not hurry.

Ha-neul walked a pace behind him, with no mask on his face.

The skinny boy and eleven other juniors came in behind Ha-neul, in a line, in their blue robes.

The Alliance Chief sat on the dais in plain brown.

Gye Dong-pil sat to his right in his master's sash, and he smiled at Si-hyeon with infinite sadness.

"Ryu Si-hyeon," said the Chief. "You have asked to be heard."

"I have."

"The charge against you is that you have been seduced by the Demonic Cult and have betrayed the Alliance. Do you answer it?"

"I'll answer it after I answer another."

Si-hyeon set the box on the floor in front of the dais and opened it.

Eleven small red pills lay on the silk.

"These were taken from the pockets of eleven Azure Cloud disciples," he said. "They were given to them by their master. Every one of those disciples is standing behind me. Ask them."

Nobody spoke.

Then the skinny boy took a step forward.

He had a missing tooth and his hands were fists, and his voice shook so badly that the front rows leaned in to hear.
