Chapter 20: Carried
The inn at the foot of Plum Pavilion mountain had been built for ordinary men.
Gwi-han came in under a grey hood, ducked under the lintel, ducked again under the beam over the stairs, and still hit his head on a hanging lantern.
The innkeeper's wife looked up from the counter.
"That's a big one," she said to Si-hyeon.
"He's my cousin," Si-hyeon said. "From the north."
"They breed them large up there."
"They do."
"Does he eat much?"
"Everything," said Gwi-han from under the hood, in a very meek voice, and Si-hyeon turned his face to the wall so she wouldn't see him laughing.
Ha-neul and the skinny boy took the room next door.
Ha-neul had refused to be left at the keep.
He sat on the edge of his cot with his sword across his knees and a blanket around his shoulders, white and quiet and alive.
He had looked at them when they came in and said, "I'll be at the hall tomorrow. In front. Don't argue."
Nobody had.
Si-hyeon's room had one window, one table, and a bed that was frankly too small for either of them.
He set the box of red pills on the table.
There were eleven.
Bi Soo-ryeon had taken them from the skinny boy's pocket and from three others, and kept them in a lacquered case.
"Evidence," Si-hyeon said.
"Evidence," Gwi-han agreed.
He had taken off the hood, and his hair spilled out around his shoulders.
He sat on the bed, which creaked, and the whole frame tilted a little toward his side.
"I think it's going to break."
"It's going to break."
"I'll buy them another."
"You can't pay an inn for a bed with a pill case."
Gwi-han looked at him with perfect dignity and a faint red flush.
"I'll sit on the floor, then."
"You will not."
