Chapter 13: What I Heard
Beau's POV
I sat in my truck outside her building for two hours and forty minutes before I got out.
Tank lay on the back seat with his chin on the console, looking at me.
"Stay," I told him, which was unnecessary, because Tank has never in his life gone anywhere without being asked twice.
Her light was on at the end of the second-floor walkway.
At 12:40 I climbed the stairs and knocked, soft, so the neighbors wouldn't hear.
She opened the door in a gray T-shirt with her hair down and her eyes swollen.
Waffles stood behind her ankles and wagged once, then remembered she was supposed to be loyal.
"You didn't follow me," Tara said.
"You told me not to."
"That was this morning."
"I know," I said. "I figured you'd say it was too late to follow, so I waited until it was late enough to just show up."
She looked at me for a long time.
"Come in," she said. "Sit on the floor. Not the couch."
I sat on her hallway floor with my back against the wall.
She sat across from me with her knees up and her phone on the boards beside her hand.
The hall was four feet wide.
I could have touched her ankle without leaning.
"All of it," she said. "Start in March. Don't clean it up."
So I told her.
I told her I'd moved to north Raleigh in February, and walked Tank at 6:40 because he wakes me at six regardless.
I told her the first morning I saw her, the second week of March, she sat down on the second bench with a coffee she never drank and cried without making a sound.
"I thought, somebody ought to say something to that woman," I said. "And then I thought, it ought not be a stranger with a dog."
"But you stayed."
"I stayed."
"Every morning," she said.
