Chapter 7: Someone Behind Me
The dessert came, and nobody ate it.
Orsola sat back down with her red mouth pressed flat.
Tancredi cut his cake in half, then in quarters, and he did not look at me.
When the captains' wives stood to leave, one of the older ones stopped behind my chair.
She was the one who had laughed.
"Child," she said, very low, in my ear. "Thank you for the rent."
Then she was gone, and I sat with my hand empty on the cloth where his had been.
He walked me upstairs, to my door.
It was not locked.
"I'm going to church at eight tomorrow," I said. "Then to the market."
"Fine."
"I'm telling you, not asking."
"I heard the difference."
He stood very still in the hall.
I waited for him to say what he had not said at the table.
He said, "Good night, Sabina," and went down the stairs.
At eight in the morning I came out of St. Anselm's on the hill, and there was a black Escalade parked at the curb with Remo behind the wheel.
I had not asked for a car.
It had followed me to church at a crawl, three hundred yards back, the whole way up the hill.
I walked up to the window and knocked.
Remo rolled it down.
"Mrs. Falzone."
"Who told you to follow me?"
His big hands tightened on the wheel.
"I can't say."
"You can say it or I'll call him."
"He'd want me to say it was a courtesy."
"Remo."
"He told me last night," Remo said, staring through the windshield. "After supper. He said keep her in sight and don't let her see me. I didn't do a good job."
