Chapter 13: The Hearing
The judge's hall in Lorien was packed to the rafters.
Half the village from the manor had come down on the river boat.
The other half of the gallery was filled with ladies in feathers who had come to see the Dragon Duke's bride.
Ysolene walked up the aisle on Valerian's arm with her chin up and the page folded into her sleeve.
Her father sat in the dock without chains.
He wore a clean coat that Fenna had stitched, and when he saw her he raised two fingers in a small salute.
Ignatius sat at the Crown's table in green velvet with a clerk at his elbow.
He smiled at Ysolene when she passed.
"The Crown calls Baron Wendric Hartlow," said the usher.
The judge was an old man with a cold, level face, and he looked at the baron over his spectacles.
"The sentence against you for the sale of the royal grain levy was passed on the strength of the ledgers."
"Do you have anything to say?"
"Only that I did not sign them," said the baron. "I've said so for four months. May I demonstrate?"
"Briefly."
He took the slate offered by the usher and chalked a line across it in a rolling, gentlemanly hand.
