Chapter 13: Custody Schedule
The Accord Hall was a white marble building on Wacker Drive, named for the Hundred-Year Accord, the treaty between the vampire Court and the wolf Pack. It belonged to nobody, and that was the whole point of it.
The two courts met there only when the treaty demanded it, with the doors guarded by one wolf and one vampire apiece, and today they had met to argue about me.
I stood in the middle of the floor in my best blouse, with Birdie at my elbow.
I tried to look like a woman who was not the subject of the agenda.
On the left sat the Council, seven chairs, Dorothea Lisle in the center with her pearls on.
On the right sat the Pack's elders and Brant, and between the two sides stood a stone table with a bowl of salt on it.
"The enforcer who attacked the tower," Dorothea was saying, "is in no way connected to this house."
Her voice was as smooth as her pearls.
"He is a freelancer. We have released him on a technicality."
"A technicality," said Benedict, behind me, softly.
