Chapter 15: The Fitting
"Drop the face, Rosamond," Sabina said again. "Mama isn't here."
I turned off the tap.
I dried my hands on a linen towel, one finger at a time.
I set my clutch on the marble beside the sink.
"Which face do you mean?" I said.
"The wounded one. It's good. I almost believed it."
She came away from the door and stood beside me, a head taller, her reflection pale and perfect next to mine.
"You think I'm stupid," she said. "Mama thinks I'm decorative. You can both be wrong."
"I think you're very good at lunch."
She laughed, low and genuine.
It was the first honest sound I had ever heard her make.
"I picked your gowns," she said. "Did you know that?"
"No."
"Every white one. White makes a girl look as if she's offering something."
"They fit very well."
"I had your measurements from the dancewear shop on Meeting Street. They were in the Sponsor's file."
