Chapter 9: The Memphis Gig

Roz Sweeney drove three hours from Nashville with a bass in the back seat and a grudge about the tour.

"You're sleeping with her," she said before she even hugged me.

We stood on the sidewalk outside a narrow Memphis club, a block off Beale Street, with neon buzzing over the door.

"I'm not discussing this on a sidewalk."

"You are, and your face is red."

"My face is always red. I'm a redhead."

"Callie Crowell, you've been to nine weddings with me where you didn't look at a single bridesmaid, and now you look at a gray suit like it owes you money."

I covered my face with both hands, and Roz hooted so loud a passing couple turned around.

We had booked the Friday night slot before the tour began.

It was the one night I'd said no to the Breckinridge people, because the band had a deposit on it and my name on the poster.

Joanna had taken it perfectly well.

"I'd like to come," she had said, and she'd said it like she was asking permission to enter a church.

Now she stood at the back of the club by the bar, in a plain black dress and no jacket, with a glass of club soda.

She had taken off her watch.

Without the suit and the cameras she looked like a woman I had met at a wedding, which was how it started.

The room was small and hot and packed to the walls.

Roz plugged in her bass and hit a low note that rattled the glasses.

Our drummer counted off four, and I stepped up to the microphone and grinned at a hundred strangers.

I love this part more than anything.

I love the first chord, when the crowd decides whether it likes you, and then the second, when it does.
