Chapter 11: The Last Night
We took the flatbed up to the hay meadow on Saturday night, the last night of the flood.
Nobody had to say that it was the last.
Dutch had spread three quilts in the bed of the truck and a fourth over the top of us.
The sky above the Absarokas was so thick with stars that it had no black left in it.
I lay on my back among the quilts with my hair loose, and the three of them lay around me.
None of us talked for a long while.
Then I turned my head to Emmett.
"Tomorrow," I said.
"I'll tell you everything at sunrise. My name. Why I came. All of it."
"Is it going to change this?" he asked.
"I don't know."
"Then tell me after," he said.
"After what?"
"After tonight," Emmett said.
He leaned over me, and the starlight caught the gray in his hair.
"I want this one slow. I want to learn it."
I reached up and touched his face.
"Slow, then," I said.
He kissed me.
It was long and unhurried, and I felt his hand come to rest low on my stomach, spread wide and warm.
On my other side Dutch slid his arm under my head, and I turned and kissed him, too, soft and sweet.
On the third side Nels put his mouth to my throat and left it there.
For a time it was only that, the three mouths, the slow stroke of hands.
I heard the creek in the dark.
I heard Dutch's breathing deepen, and Nels's laugh against my skin when I shivered.
"Cold?" Nels said.
"No."
"Liar," he said.
"Warm me up, then."
They did.
Emmett's mouth went down my body the way he had done it the first night, with his rough beard over my ribs and my belly.
He kissed my hip bones.
He kissed the inside of my thighs, and I felt the weight of his hands on my knees.
