Chapter 20: Two Lines

Nels had driven back to Big Timber at dawn, and he came home with a paper bag from the drugstore and a face he could not make straight.

I took the bag into the bathroom of my grandfather's house and locked the door.

The bathroom was old and white and cold, with a deep claw-foot tub, and a mirror that had gone gray at the edges.

I did what the box said.

Then I sat on the edge of the tub with the stick in my hand and watched the little window.

The first line came up almost at once.

The second came up slowly, faint and then not faint at all, a clear dark pink beside the first.

Two lines.

I looked at them for a long time.

I had sat with sixty-one people while they died.

Now there was something the size of a seed inside me that had not asked for any of this, and wanted to live.

I put my hand on my stomach and cried without a sound.

A knock came, soft, two knuckles.

"Jess?"

It was Dutch.

I stood and unlocked the door.

He came in, filling it, and shut it behind him.

He saw my face and he saw the stick on the sink, and his big pale face crumpled slowly.

"Oh, honey," he said.

"Yes," I said.

"Yes, Dutch."

"Is it?" he said.

"It's two lines."
