Chapter 21: The Mirror Hall

"Jingmo," said the abbot.

He did not shout.

He threw his plain wooden staff across the terrace, end over end, and a very large hand caught it out of the air.

The blade at Yanzhi's throat had not yet moved.

The staff came around in a flat arc and cracked across the Warden's wrist.

The cane sword rang off the stone and spun over the edge of the mountain.

The Warden let go of Yanzhi's hair.

He did not shout either.

He turned, smooth as an eel, and put two fingers to the jade bell at his belt.

It rang.

The sound hit Yanzhi in the bones.

A pale green light rolled over the terrace, and the nearest exorcists dropped to their knees with their hands over their ears.

The Warden was suddenly standing a foot taller than he had been.

He moved.

Yanzhi saw him cross twenty feet of stone in the beat of a heart.

Jingmo's staff went up and met him, and the crack of wood on a forearm was like a tree splitting.

They broke apart.

They came together.

Jingmo took a blow to the ribs that would have killed an ox and turned it into a step, and the Warden laughed.

"A hundred pearls," he said, light and delighted. "A hundred years of fox in my blood. What have you got, boy? Seven years of sweeping?"

"Yes," said Jingmo.

He swung.

Yanzhi could do very little.

His hands were in iron, and his knees were on stone.
