Chapter 19: The Captains
Elior went down the inn stairs with his shirt half laced and his sword in his hand.
The square was full of horses.
Two hundred lancers sat their mounts in a half circle around the well, with their lances leveled at the sixty riders in grey.
The northerners had not drawn a blade.
Teodric stood in the middle of the cobbles on foot, with his hands held open at his sides and snow in his hair.
"Stand clear of the wolf, Commander!" bellowed a rider at the head of the line.
He was a heavy man of forty with a broken nose, and he wore the blue and silver of the left wing.
"We've come to take you home!"
"Captain," said Elior.
He crossed the cobbles at a walk.
He stopped between the lance points and the duke, in his open shirt, with his back to the northern guard.
"Put those down."
"Commander, they say you're held."
"You can see I'm not."
"I see a man who's been given a coat and told to stand where he's put."
The captain's eyes were red-rimmed.
"I was at the Ford.
"I saw what this man's army did to the right wing."
"I saw it too," said Elior.
