Chapter 19: Rehearsal
The first run of the joint number with both squads started at 5:04 on Wednesday, and by 5:06 it was a disaster.
I had never seen anything go wrong so fast.
The skaters did their opening minute perfectly.
Thirty-six of us moved across the ice in slow loops, braids flying.
In the box seats the cello player drew out the first long note.
It was beautiful.
I stood in the center with my arm raised and thought for a moment that we might actually do it.
Then the tunnel door opened.
The plan was simple.
Twenty-six hockey players would skate out in a line, wide and slow, and feed into our pattern bar by bar.
They came out in a line, all right.
They came out as fast as they could, because that was how they had come out of that tunnel every morning of their lives.
"Slow!" I yelled. "Slow, slow, slow!"
"We are slow!" the freshman yelled back.
