Chapter 16: Game Seven, Again
On Thursday at five fifteen, Doran's mother came through the kitchen door.
She carried a tin of butter tarts, and her wool coat was buttoned to her chin.
She was small and sixty, with a long gray braid, and she looked at the kitchen.
The whole team stopped in the middle of setting up family meal.
"Mom," Doran said, and his voice cracked in the middle of the word.
She put the tin down on my pass.
"Where is she?" she said.
"Mom, this is Corinna."
I wiped my hands on my apron.
She looked me over from my knot of hair to my clogs, slowly.
Then she took my face in both of her cold hands.
"You're built like my mother," she said. "She could carry a hundred-pound sack of flour up cellar stairs. I'll bet you can."
"I can," I said.
"Good."
She hugged me hard, and she smelled like snow and cigarettes she'd quit years ago.
