The video ended on Chad's wink.

Inga threw her phone onto the couch.

I was already standing up.

"Where are you going?"

"Home," I said.

She looked at me for a long second.

Then she went and got my coat from the hook and held it open for me.

"Text me when you're inside," she said. "And if he's weird, I have a bat."

"He won't be weird."

"I know. That's why I'm letting you go."

I walked from the bus stop on Central in the dark.

The duplex windows were lit upstairs.

My heart was going so hard I had to stop on the bottom step.

Then I went up.

The door wasn't locked.

Knox was standing at the stove with his back to me, stirring something.

He turned around.

He had flour on his T-shirt and a wooden spoon in his hand and absolutely no idea what to do with his face.

"Hi," he said.

"Hi."

"I didn't know if you'd come home."

"I live here."

"I know. I didn't want to assume."

"I'm making Gran's pot roast," he said. "The frozen one. It's got your name on it, so technically it's yours."
