Chapter 9: Her Bed
I went down the steps in my robe and knocked on the window of the Ranger.
Mikko rolled it down and grinned at me.
"Brit! I was just passing," he said.
"For an hour."
"It's a long street."
"Not tonight," I said. "I'm wrecked. Come back tomorrow, after the others leave."
"Tomorrow," he said, and he pressed both hands against his chest. "I'll be the best-behaved man in Minnesota."
"Don't. Be the other kind."
He grinned so wide that I could see it by the streetlight, and then he started the truck and drove off with the stereo on.
On Thursday night he came to my door in a clean shirt, with his curls damp and combed, holding a grocery-store bouquet of tulips.
"I didn't know what you liked," he said. "The lady at the store said everybody likes tulips. She's a liar. I can tell by your face."
"I like tulips," I said.
"Really?"
"Mikko. Come upstairs."
I took the flowers and set them on the hall table and took his hand.
He followed me up the staircase without a single joke.
It was the quietest I'd ever heard him.
At my bedroom door, I stopped.
Nobody had been in that bed with me since the day my husband left.
It was big, and made, and very quiet.
"Hey," Mikko said, softly. "You okay?"
"I'm fine."
"You went somewhere."
"It's just a bed," I said.
"It's a pretty good one," he said. "Want me to jump on it and break it in?"
I laughed out loud.
It came up out of my chest, unplanned, and it filled the room and went on for a while.
"There she is," he said. "Come on, Brit. Let me."
He picked me up.
I shrieked.
He carried me across the room and tossed me on the quilt.
He jumped on after me and the whole frame creaked.
