Chapter 9: Du-sik in the Back
"You watched her sign me away."
Si-on said it to the Devil's back at eleven that night, across the length of the chain room, with his fists shaking at his sides.
Seo-jin stood at the window with his glass of whisky and did not turn.
They had spent the day in the car.
They had driven the fish market, the shop, every bus stop between Yeongdo and Nampo-dong.
They had found a drain and a pair of broken glasses and nothing else.
Si-on had not spoken in six hours.
Now it came out all at once.
"You sat in that chair and you watched her put my name on a form, and then you let her walk out."
"Yes," Seo-jin said.
"You didn't stop her. You didn't call me. You let me think for a week..."
"Five days."
"...that she sold me for money!" His voice cracked off the concrete.
"You said nobody walks out of your office with nothing. You said she knew the price."
"I've been lying in your bed hating her," Si-on said, "and she was running for her life, and you knew."
"I did not know why she was running."
"You knew enough!"
Seo-jin put the glass down.
He turned.
His face was the same as ever, a pale smooth mask, but there was a vein standing out on the side of his neck.
"What would you have done?" he said, quietly.
"If I had told you in my office, with four men holding your arms. If I had said, your mother is being hunted by Hong Dae-seong, and she has put you in my hands because she has no one else."
"I'd have gone to her," Si-on said.
