Chapter 18: The Sit-Down
The back room of Colucci Provisions had one long table and one light.
At ten o'clock the kitchen was dark, and the street door was bolted, and nine men sat down across from each other without a word.
Raf took the head, with the old uncle on his left and Pio at the foot.
He had put me on his right in front of all of them.
Nobody remarked on it, and I saw the old uncle look at the chair once and not again.
Ugo came in last, in a gray suit, with three men behind him.
One was young, and one was heavy, and the third had a pale scar across his chin like a crooked smile.
Paola walked beside Ugo in a white dress.
She had done her lipstick, and her eyes slid over me and went to the wall.
Ugo took the head of his side.
He pulled out the chair on his right, and she sat in it.
"Gentlemen," Ugo said softly. "And lady. Thank you for the courtesy."
"You asked under the old rules," the old uncle said. "State it."
"I will, briefly."
Ugo turned a ring.
"Raffaele Colucci has taken into the books of this family a woman with a state license and a husband under review. She is a danger to every man at this table."
"She is a CPA," the old uncle said.
