Chapter 13: The Hotel

Rory didn't answer him.

I did.

"He's not saying goodbye to me, Armando. Not in a week. Not ever."

Armando didn't look at me.

He was still looking at Rory, and Rory was looking back, and neither of them blinked.

"Seven days," Armando said. "I'm a patient man."

"You were never patient a day in your life."

That made him look at me.

For a second something almost like a smile went over his mouth.

"No," he said. "You always did know me."

He turned and went down the stairs, and his man went down ahead of him.

Across the landing, the old woman in rollers was still in her doorway.

"Well," she said to Rory. "Your mum's going to hear about this."

Then she shut her door.

At five that morning I was in Jess's kitchen with my hands in the dough, because the dough didn't care who was in London.

At six Jess came through the back door and dropped her keys on the counter.

"There are two men outside my café," she said. "In black coats. Standing on my pavement like lampposts."

I went to the round window.

They were there, across Druid Street, under the arch where the cabs turned.
