Chapter 22: The Pier
The Fox Point pier at seven in the morning was all gulls and cold iron.
Two flatbed trucks backed up to the edge, and a rusty freighter sat against the quay with its cranes swinging crates down into the hold.
Dario Rizzo stood on a stack of pallets with the leather case under his arm and a bullhorn in his hand.
Below him stood about three hundred dock workers in work jackets, frowning up.
Silvio got out of the car on the quay road, and the rest of them climbed out behind him.
Bruno with his sling, Gianna, four Ferrante cousins, a dozen Sartori guards.
Then Vittorio.
He was gaunt and grey under his long coat, one hand on a cane and the other on Silvio's shoulder.
The doctor had said no to all of it.
"You should be in bed," Silvio said.
"You said you'd take me with you."
"I said that in a hospital."
"Hospitals don't count," Vittorio said, and walked.
Dario's bullhorn crackled.
"Men! You have been cheated by the Ferrantes and the Sartoris!" he called. "Your wages were frozen on purpose."
"But I have the seal of the Rizzo family, and I have a cargo that pays you triple."
