Chapter 9: The Gate
The gate stood open, and Gianna's small blue car came through it too fast.
It skidded across the gravel and stopped with one wheel on the lawn.
Behind it, four black cars jammed the road, and Dario Rizzo stood on the running board of the first, shouting.
"Close it!" Vittorio yelled.
Two guards threw their weight on the gate.
A Rizzo man got an arm through the gap, and Silvio, barefoot and in his shirt, reached him first.
He caught the man's wrist, yanked him forward, and put a right hand into his jaw.
The man dropped.
It felt good.
Silvio's knuckles sang, and he was grinning.
He saw Vittorio look at him over the heads of the guards with open, helpless hunger.
"Eyes front!" Silvio shouted.
A second man came through, and a third.
Silvio ducked a swing and drove a fist into a stomach, and the man folded.
Bruno hauled the gate closed, and Vittorio took a pistol from his waistband, aimed once, and shot out the front tire of Dario's car.
