Chapter 8: What He Knew
"Four months ago," Vittorio said.
The water had gone lukewarm.
He sat with his back against the tub and Silvio's weight on his chest.
He kept his voice flat.
"Bruno has a friend at the bank the Rizzos use. The friend noticed the same eleven transfers you found."
"Rizzo's father hadn't noticed yet, but his son Dario had, and Dario put a name on the thief."
"My name."
"Yours. Dario went to your uncle, and your uncle didn't deny it. He said you had a gambling problem and he was ashamed."
Silvio sat up slowly.
"I've never bet on anything in my life."
"I know. Ottavio offered Dario a settlement."
"He would give you up at Gianna's wedding reception, in front of both families, and let the Rizzos do what they liked."
"In exchange, Dario would wait for the four million."
Silvio's whole body went cold.
"They'd have killed me."
"Probably after a long night."
"And you knew."
"I knew."
"You could have told me."
"I could have," Vittorio said. "You would have gone straight to your uncle."
"You'd have asked him to his face, because that's who you are. He'd have lied, and you'd have believed him for a week."
