Chapter 7: Uncle Ottavio Calls
Uncle Ottavio arrived at ten the next morning with a bottle of grappa and a leather folder.
Silvio met him in the front hall.
He had not slept, and the ledger pages were in his head.
"Nephew," Ottavio said, spreading his arms. "My boy. Married a week and already you have color in your face."
"We were married on Saturday. It's Tuesday."
"Such a joker."
Ottavio put the grappa in a guard's hands and set the folder on the hall table.
Two guards stood at the door, and Vittorio waited at the top of the stairs with his hands in his pockets.
Silvio had asked him, an hour ago, to let him do this alone.
Vittorio had looked at him for a long time and said, "Five minutes."
"Just a formality," Ottavio said. "The pact needs an audit letter for the lawyers."
"One signature, to say the Ferrante books are in order and the dowry is paid."
"There's no dowry in the pact."
"Then we'll call it a courtesy."
He slid the letter across the table.
Silvio read it.
It was three paragraphs, typed, and at the bottom a line of handwriting in blue ink had been added: Reviewed and approved by S. Ferrante.
