Chapter 21: The Meeting

The county board met in a high paneled chamber on the courthouse's second floor, under a ceiling of pressed tin.

Five commissioners sat behind a long curved desk with microphones and water glasses.

Below them the room was full.

Reporters lined the side wall, with a television camera on a tripod and a row of men in good coats in the front.

The Haugens had come in a body.

I knew them without being told.

There were three, an old man with a cane and two sons, and they sat in the front row with their knees apart and their hats on their laps.

Behind them, in uniform, sat the sheriff.

He was a large pink man with a gray mustache, and he did not look at me.

In the second row sat Andy Lindqvist, in a salt-stained clinic jacket, with his hands folded.

Matt sat in the last row against the wall, with his hands in his lap.

He had kept his word.

I had seen him come in and take the chair nearest the door, and not look at me once.

Pavel sat beside him with a briefcase.

I stood at the witness table with my father's binder in front of me.

My lawyer stood at my elbow.

"The county calls Maija Kallio," said the chairman.
