Chapter 29: The Raid

Corvin put both babies in my arms in one movement and stood up.

He had nothing on but a flour sack and nothing in his hands at all.

The first hooded man came at him with the knife.

Corvin caught the wrist and turned it, and the man went into the wall so hard the lamp jumped on its hook.

Agnes came up off the sacks with a shriek and her iron poker.

The second man went down holding his knee.

The midwife was on her feet, between me and the door, with a chair in both hands.

I couldn't stand.

I tried. My legs were water.

I curled around the twins on the sacks and held them against my chest.

The third man got past the chair.

He didn't come for me. He came for the bundles.

He knew exactly which one. Blue thread on the swaddle. The midwife had stitched it so we'd know them apart.

He tore my son out of my arm.

My son screamed.

I grabbed for the man's hood and got cloth, and it ripped.

Then he was gone out of the door into the dark with my baby under his arm.

"Corvin!"

Corvin had the fourth man on the floor and two more were coming through the door.

He looked up.

I saw him see the empty blue swaddle in my lap.

I saw him try to get through the doorway and the two men put themselves in it.
