Chapter 23: Properly
We got home at one in the morning with our shoes in our hands.
The radiator was knocking, and the kitchen light made the room small and yellow.
Niles put his rented jacket on the back of a chair and stood in the middle of my floor in his shirtsleeves.
He looked at the table and the stove and the one cracked mug by the sink.
"This is where I'd like to do it," he said.
"Do what?"
"What you told me to do."
He took a breath, and he went down on one knee on my linoleum.
It was awkward with the sling.
I put my hand over my mouth.
"Get up," I said.
"You'll ruin the knee."
"I'm not proposing."
"Oh."
"I'm not that brave yet.
I'd like to ask for something I can actually deliver tonight."
His eyes were serious.
"The board will take months to seat.
My mother will fight me on the house.
My name is going to be in the newspaper for a year.
None of that is what I want to ask you about."
