Chapter 20: Kathleen's POV

Kathleen's POV

I sat in his lap in the swivel chair with my back to him and my face to the window.

I kept my promise from the night before.

"You asked why I never looked at you," I said.

His hands stopped on my hips.

We were in the little office over Cullinane's, with the door locked and the blinds half open.

Below us West Broadway was green from curb to curb, and the first drum line of the parade was coming up the street.

I was naked from the waist down, with my skirt rucked at my ribs, and he was inside me to the root.

He had been there for a long, slow while, and neither of us had moved.

"You don't have to say it now," Marek said, low, against my shoulder.

"I want to say it like this, where I can't see your face. Then I'll turn around."

He breathed out, and his chest moved against my back.

"I looked at no one," I said. "Not you. Not the girls at the bar or the priest. For five years I went into every room looking at the floor, because if I looked at a person they might see my arm."

"Kathleen."

"If I made myself small enough, I thought nobody would ask. I was learning to not be seen. You were the biggest person I knew, and I never even looked at your shoes."

His arms came around my waist and held me tight.

"It wasn't you," I said. "It was never you."

"I know."

"Now I want you to see me. And I want to see you."

I lifted off him an inch, and sank back down, and he groaned into my hair.

The drums outside rose and rattled the glass.

I reached into the pocket of my skirt, where I had put it that morning, and brought out the little silver toy.

I held it up in the window light so that he could see.

"Oh, God," he said. "Here?"

"Here. With everyone going by."

I clicked it on and pressed it into his hand.

"Hold it for me," I said. "Right here."

I guided his wrist down between my legs until the hum touched my clit.
