Chapter 14: Slow
Darius's POV
I took her shirt off over her head and laid it on the pillow, and she watched me do it with her chin tucked.
The lamp from the hall put a yellow stripe across the bed.
She had told me she wanted the light on, so I left the stripe where it was.
Amber lay on her back with her chestnut hair spread on the sheet and her hands open at her sides.
She is five feet one. I have been told since I was twelve that I am a lot of man.
I have spent ten years learning to put it away.
With her I have to learn it again every time.
"You're doing it," she said.
"Doing what?"
"Thinking so hard you're holding your breath," she said.
"I'm looking."
"Then look closer."
I unhooked her bra and slid the straps down her arms.
I put my palm between her breasts, flat, and it covered her from collarbone to ribs.
Her heartbeat knocked against my hand, fast and uneven.
I stayed there until it slowed down a little.
"Tell me something true," she said. "You've heard all my stuff."
I had not planned to.
I took my hand off her chest and sat on the edge of the mattress with my back to her.
I looked at my boots on the carpet.
"My father left on a Sunday," I said.
She did not say anything.
"My mama was seven months with me. He got up from the table after church, said he was going for cigarettes, and drove to Alabama. She set his plate in the oven for three days."
I heard the sheets move.
"I swore I'd never be the one who leaves. I was little, and I swore it on the back steps, and I've kept it. I'm the one who stays at every job and every table."
"Darius."
"That's why I'm slow," I said. "Part of it. I don't want to be the guy who got up."
